The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that it will offer license-free fishing days for all state residents and visitors on June 1, June 8, and July 4. These annual events provide an opportunity for anglers to explore Maryland's diverse fishing locations without the need for a fishing license, trout stamp, or registration.
The DNR hosts license-free fishing on the first two Saturdays of June and on the Independence Day holiday each year, capitalizing on peak spring and summer fishing conditions. On these designated days, individuals are permitted to catch and possess finfish for recreational purposes in both tidal and nontidal waters across Maryland. All participants must adhere to current regulations, including size and catch limits, as outlined in the department's fishing and crabbing guide.
To support new and experienced anglers, the DNR offers various resources such as angler access maps and fish identification charts. Additionally, anglers are encouraged to subscribe to the weekly Maryland Fishing Report for up-to-date information on fishing conditions.
This year, the DNR is also promoting the capture of invasive species like snakeheads and blue catfish, which are negatively impacting the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. These species are also considered excellent for eating, and a variety of recipes can be found on the Maryland's Best website.
Apart from these license-free fishing days and certain license-free areas, anyone aged 16 or older must have a valid fishing license to fish in Maryland. Licenses can be obtained or renewed online, through the DNR mobile app, in person at a department service center or participating retail sports license agent, or by calling 866-344-8889 during normal business hours.
