Woodland Community College received an honorable mention selection for the Dr. John W. Rice Student Success Award.
Established in 2001, the Dr. John W. Rice Awards recognize community colleges leading the way in progressing student success and equity, according to college officials.

The California Community College Chancellor's Office evaluated statewide data in meeting Vision 2030, which included student success outcomes and increases on the number of students completing transfer-level English and math, college officials noted.
After evaluation of statewide data, Woodland College was selected as a finalist. The college is located at 2300 E. Gibson Road. An Express Registration is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, where potential students can get personalized assistance with applying and registering for classes in the upcoming semester.
Earlier this year, Woodland College formally opened its Performing Arts Center and Culinary Institute. This summer it has been hosting a number of student-oriented events, including a tour for UC Davis Siskiyou Upward Bound students who also participated in a salsa-making competition and showing future high school freshmen from the UC Davis Early Academic Outreach Program what the college has to offer.
Under the criteria for the Rice Awards, selected colleges must have demonstrated "the most significant gains in outcomes, particularly in ensuring that all students complete gateway transfer-level English and math within one year of their first attempt.
"Special emphasis was placed on colleges that achieved the greatest closure of equity gaps between students of color in transfer level completion over the past three years," Woodland College representatives note.
In addition to increases in students completing transfer-level English and math, Woodland College also had a 48% surge in associate degree completions.
"Woodland College's success is a testament to the unwavering dedication of its faculty and staff, whose commitment to excellence and equity has made this recognition possible," stated a college administrator. "This recognition underscores the impact of their hard work. As the college prepared for the start of the Fall semester on Aug. 12, the faculty and staff begin the year with this continued commitment to the betterment of student outcomes and the ongoing pursuit of educational equity."
The annual Dr. John W. Rice Award winners were announced on July 22 during a statewide event held at the Citizen Hotel in Sacramento.
Former US Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, daughter of Dr. John Rice addressed the crowd via video and Clara Rice, widow of John, was a special guest.
Woodland Community College was accredited in 2008 as the 110th California Community College and is also designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
