LEONARDTOWN, MD — St. Mary's County is set to host a special celebration for National Lighthouse Weekend on August 3-4, 2024, at the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum & Historic Park. The event, highlighting the oldest lighthouse on the Potomac, will feature free tours of the museum and lighthouse from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Located in Piney Point, MD, the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum invites visitors to explore its expansive grounds which include the lighthouse tower, Keeper's Quarters, and the Potomac River Maritime Exhibit. This exhibit showcases full-sized workboats and offers a deep dive into the maritime history of the region, spread across two floors of the main museum building.
While there is no charge for admission or tours during this event, the museum encourages donations to help support its ongoing educational and preservation efforts.
National Lighthouse Day, celebrated on August 7, marks the anniversary of the 1789 Congressional Act that established the support system for lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers across the United States. This weekend's event at Piney Point not only commemorates this important piece of maritime history but also celebrates the community's ongoing commitment to preserving these historic landmarks.
