Marseille, France—Markus Edegran, a distinguished alumnus of St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM), will make his Olympic debut in the Men's Kite competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics on August 4. Edegran's participation marks a continuation of SMCM's legacy of producing top-tier talent in international sailing competitions.
The opening race is scheduled for 6:13 a.m. Eastern time in Marseille, with live streaming available through NBC's Peacock platform. Fans can follow the event details and access full results on the official Olympic website.
Edegran is the latest in a series of SMCM graduates who have excelled on the Olympic stage. His predecessors include Mark Ivey, who led Sweden to a gold medal in 2012, and Scott Steele, a 1984 silver medalist. Other SMCM alumni with Olympic credentials include Farrah Hall, Mayumi Roller, Jesse Kirkland, and Bruce Merritt, demonstrating the college's significant contributions to the sport over the years.
Currently, SMCM's sailing influence extends beyond its alumni. Bill Ward, the current director of sailing and varsity coach at SMCM, coached the U.S. Laser Class team in the 2008 Olympics. Jessica Deutchman Mohler, another SMCM graduate, is serving as the sports psychologist for the US Sailing team at the 2024 games.
Adam Werblow, director of the Waterfront and head varsity sailing coach at SMCM, recalls Edegran's ambitions from his first days at the college. "Markus was clear about his Olympic dreams when he joined us. His commitment was evident throughout his collegiate career, where he not only excelled academically but also stood out in national competitions," Werblow stated.
Edegran, who achieved national recognition at the 2016 College Sailing National Championships, is noted for his exemplary qualities that align well with Olympic ideals. "His dedication and superior athletic skills are complemented by an intense focus, making him a standout in the Formula Kite class," said Coach Ward. This event is renowned for its advanced technology and the high level of skill and athleticism it demands.
As the SMCM community and fans worldwide anticipate Edegran's performance, Werblow expressed confidence in his potential impact at the Olympics. "His love for sailing and relentless pursuit of excellence are sure to shine in Marseille. We're excited to see him embrace this incredible opportunity," Werblow added.
