Sharks update: Qualifying offers, dev camp roster announced

By gqlshare on June 30, 2024

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks have issued qualifying offers to seven of their restricted free agents but are leaving four others — defenseman Calen Addison and forwards Jacob Peterson, Jack Studnicka, and Filip Zadina – free to sign with other teams.

The Sharks retained the negotiating rights to forwards Egor Afanasyev, Thomas Bordeleau, Brandon Coe, Ty Dellandrea, and Carl Grundstrom, and defensemen Ty Emberson and Henry Thrun.

Afanasyev, Dellandrea, Grundstrom, and Thrun were all acquired via trade, Bordeleau and Coe were San Jose draft picks, and Emberson was a waiver claim last year.

Sharks general manager said last week that Addison would not qualified, and the Sharks, per a source, did not have any conversations with Studnicka and Zadina about a new deal as of late last week.

Zadina was signed to a one-year, $1.1 million contract by the Sharks last July after he asked for his previous contract with the Detroit Red Wings to be terminated. Zadina had 13 goals and 23 points in 72 games for San Jose, but he was used mainly in a depth role, averaging just over 13 minutes in ice time per game.

Studnicka played 22 games for the Sharks after he was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in December for a 2024 sixth-round draft pick in 2024 and defenseman Nick Cicek. He had one goal and averaged 11:27 in ice time per game.

The moves give the Sharks a bit more roster flexibility going into the first day of free agency on Monday.

DEVELOPMENT CAMP ROSTER ANNOUNCED: Macklin Celebrini, Sam Dickinson and six other members of the Sharks' most recent draft class will be at the team's development camp, which starts Tuesday and ends Thursday with a prospects scrimmage at Tech CU Arena.

Other players expected to attend include 2023 draft picks Will Smith, Quentin Musty, Kasper Halttunen, and Luca Cagnoni. Filip Bystedt, the Sharks' first-round pick in 2022, and David Edstrom, who was drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round last year and traded to the Sharks in March, will also be there.

The full roster has 21 forwards, 17 defensemen, and four goalies.

Shakir Mukhamadullin, the Barracuda's Most Valuable Player for this past season, is not slated to be at the camp as he's spending the offseason in his native Russia.

The prospect scrimmage begins Thursday at 11 a.m. Tickets can be purchased on the Sharks' website.
