Hello and welcome to a Black ecologies nature walk at Evergreen Brick Works. Black ecologies is a lens that I use to look at how nature and Black history intersect. On this walk I'll use it to show the links between birds, birdwatching, and Black history. Yes, they are linked!
Look up in the tree tops and see if you can spot a Red-tailed Hawk. Birds have a local and scientific name. That of the Red-tailed Hawk is Buteo jamaicensis. It is Latin and means broad wing hawk from Jamaica. The scientific name is the Black ecologies link. The hawk got its scientific name in 1780s, based on specimens from Jamaica. Those specimens arrived in Britain via slave ships that also carried sugar, spices and other tropical products. So, the scientific name of the bird is a clue to the Atlantic Slave Trade.
