Earlier this week, Woodland Joint Unified School District Trustee Deborah Bautista Zavala announced her campaign for the Area 6 seat on the Yuba Community College District Board of Trustees.
"During the past six years on the Woodland School Board, I have had the privilege of working closely with educators, administrators, parents and community members to ensure that our public schools provide the best possible education for our students," Bautista Zavala stated. "I am eager to bring this experience and passion for education to the Yuba Community College District."
While her efforts for this seat have just begun, she has already earned the endorsements of several key elected officials and community leaders.
Bautista Zavala's endorsements include YCCD Trustee Jesse Ortiz, Congressman Mike Thompson, California State Senator Bill Dodd, Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig, Woodland Mayor Tania Garcia Cadena and Councilmembers Rich Lansburgh, Tom Stallard and Mayra Vega, WJUSD board President Rogelio Villagran, board members Kandice Fowler, Sandra Mott and Noel Rodriguez, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, State Board of Equalization Member Tony Vazquez, Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, former Woodland mayors Dr. Skip Davies and Xochitl Rodriguez Murillo, former YCCD Trustee Xavier Tafoya
former WJUSD board members Cirenio Rodriguez, Carol Souza Cole, Meg Stallard and Jake Whitaker, former United States Senator Barbara Boxer, former Assembly Speakers Fabian Nunez and Antonio Villaraigosa and city of Woodland Planning Commissioner Marco Lizaraga.
"As a proud lifelong resident of Woodland, California, and as a mother of two school-age daughters, I am deeply invested in our students' success and our community's prosperity," said Bautista Zavala. "If elected to the Yuba Community College District Board, I will bring the same dedication, integrity, and collaborative spirit that I have demonstrated on the Woodland School Board. I will work tirelessly to address the needs of our district, advocate for increased funding and resources, and be a champion for all students."
Bautista Zavala has represented Area 1 on the WJUSD board since 2018. In her first election, she prevailed over Tania Tafoya by 3.6 percent of the vote. In 2022, she ran unopposed. Her current term expires in December 2026.
If elected to the YCCD board, Bautista Zavala stated she would step down from her current position. By law, she cannot serve on both boards at the same time.
YCCD President Susan Alves currently serves as the trustee for Area 6. She was re-elected to the board in 2020, and her current term expires in December 2024.
In addition to her role as a Woodland School Board Member, Bautista Zavala currently serves as chief deputy to California State Board of Equalization Member Antonio Vazquez, representing the Southern California/Los Angeles region. Previously, she advocated for the Los Angeles Unified School District at the California State Capitol.
Bautista Zavala is also a member of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality and is Vice President of the California Latino School Board Association. In December 2023, the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awarded Bautista Zavala the Estrella Champion Award for her impact as a Latina leader, and in 2018, she received the city of Woodland's Community Service Award.
