Calvert County Public Schools has been awarded the prestigious title of Premier Community for Theatre Education by the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA). This recognition is given to schools and districts that show exceptional commitment to providing theatre education and access to students.

"We are honored to be recognized as a Premier Community for Theatre Education," said Dr. Andraé Townsel, Superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools. "This designation speaks to our dedication to fostering creativity, collaboration, and expression through the arts. We are proud to provide our students with exceptional theatre education opportunities that enrich their lives and empower their voices."

Qualification Process

To achieve this distinction, each high school in Calvert County Public Schools had to answer detailed questions about various aspects of their theatre programs. These aspects included funding, teacher development and evaluation, theatre class curriculum and participation, instruction time, facilities, and overall support for the theatre program. The responses were verified with official documentation and reviewed by the Educational Theatre Association.

The application process involved contributions from Calvert High School, Huntingtown High School, Northern High School, and Patuxent High School. Collectively, these schools demonstrated the high standards and dedication required to earn the Premier Community for Theatre Education designation.

Benefits of Theatre Education

Research has long supported the educational and social-emotional benefits of participating in school theatre. Studies indicate that students who receive drama-based instruction make better connections to the curricular content. Additionally, 95% of school administrators believe that theatre experiences improve students' overall academic skills.

Dr. Jennifer Katona, EdTA's executive director, highlighted the importance of community involvement in building and sustaining a quality theatre program. "EdTA celebrates the community effort it takes to build and sustain a quality theatre program," said Dr. Katona. "The Premier Communities for Theatre Education distinction recognizes the work done by the entire school or district—from administration to teachers to students and parents—to ensure a safe and robust education in theatre is available to all students. We are thrilled to celebrate this cohort of schools and look forward to continuing to recognize high-quality programs in future years."

Commitment to Excellence

Calvert County Public Schools' achievement underscores the district's commitment to excellence in theatre education. The recognition reflects the district's ongoing efforts to enhance students' creative and academic experiences through robust theatre programs. The designation as a Premier Community for Theatre Education not only acknowledges past accomplishments but also sets a high standard for future initiatives.

By investing in theatre education, Calvert County Public Schools provides students with opportunities to develop critical skills such as creativity, communication, and collaboration. These skills are essential for success in various academic and professional fields. The district's theatre programs are designed to be inclusive, ensuring that all students have access to high-quality arts education.

Future Aspirations

Moving forward, Calvert County Public Schools aims to build on this success by continuing to support and expand its theatre programs. The district plans to invest in further teacher development, enhance facilities, and increase student participation in theatre activities. By doing so, they hope to sustain their status as a leader in theatre education and inspire other districts to prioritize the arts in their curricula.

In conclusion, the recognition of Calvert County Public Schools as a Premier Community for Theatre Education by the EdTA is a testament to the district's dedication to providing exceptional theatre education. This achievement highlights the importance of community support and collaboration in fostering a thriving arts education environment. As Calvert County Public Schools continues to prioritize and expand its theatre programs, it sets a shining example for other districts to follow.
