WALDORF, Md. — The pride of Thomas Stone High School gathered at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday, May 28, for the graduation ceremony of the Class of 2024. The event saw 230 graduates, led by valedictorian Charlie Bowie and salutatorian Noah Prado, celebrating the culmination of their high school journey.
Valedictorian Charlie Bowie, who is set to attend Boston University in the fall to study political science, delivered an inspiring speech. He urged his fellow graduates to utilize the skills they have developed throughout their education to actively contribute to society. "Through our education, we have honed the ability to think critically," Bowie remarked. He emphasized the importance of conducting research, participating in politics, finding meaningful careers, and effectively communicating. These skills, he noted, are crucial for becoming capable and productive members of their communities.
Bowie acknowledged the uncertainties of the future but encouraged his peers not to be discouraged. "The future is uncertain, and sometimes it's easy to feel like we don't measure up to the metric of great things," he said. "But that doesn't mean you give up or don't try."
Superintendent of Schools Maria V. Navarro, Ed.D., echoed Bowie's sentiments in her address to the graduates. "Like your valedictorian said, take pride in the fact that you have succeeded in a more challenging high school environment than those before you," Navarro stated, congratulating the students on their achievements.
Despite being the smallest graduating class in the county this year, with 230 graduates, Thomas Stone High School's Class of 2024 has achieved remarkable success. They collectively received nearly $18.4 million in scholarship offers. This accomplishment highlights the dedication and hard work of both the students and the school's staff.
Graduation ceremonies for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) continue on Wednesday, May 29, also at Regency Furniture Stadium. La Plata High School is scheduled to graduate at 9 a.m., followed by Westlake High School's commencement exercises at 1 p.m.
For those unable to attend in person, CCPS is livestreaming all graduation ceremonies on their website (www.ccboe.com), as well as on their Vimeo and YouTube channels. More information can be found at CCPS Graduation 2024.
