SPARKS GLENCOE, Md. — In an intense matchup that extended into overtime, the St. Mary's College men's lacrosse team faced a narrow defeat against Dickinson College this Saturday. Despite a remarkable six-goal performance from sophomore Joshua Martel, the Seahawks fell 13-12 in an extra frame loss, marking the end of their four-game winning streak.
The game, played on Tierney Field at the USA Lacrosse National Headquarters, saw St. Mary's College drop to a 7-3 record for the season, while Dickinson College, ranked seventh nationally, advanced to a 9-1 standing.
The match unfolded with high tension from the start. Dickinson took the initial lead, which was quickly overtaken by St. Mary's College with a series of four unanswered goals, showcasing Martel's scoring prowess early on. The back-and-forth continued, with the teams entering halftime tied at 8-8.
Dickinson found a rhythm in the third quarter, gaining a slight edge, but the resilient Seahawks managed to tie the game once again, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter and eventual overtime.
Owen Porter of Dickinson became the deciding factor in overtime, scoring an unassisted goal that sealed the victory for the Red Devils. Despite St. Mary's outshooting Dickinson and leading in ground balls, the match's intensity was matched in the face-off stats, slightly favoring Dickinson.
Notable performances from St. Mary's included junior Nate Hochrein's game-high four assists and sophomore Matteo Ciccarello's 14 face-off wins. Senior Johnny McGrain and first-year Declan Horton also made significant contributions on the scoreboard.
Dickinson's victory was further bolstered by Porter's total of five goals and goalkeeper Patrick Scarborough's 16 saves, showcasing the depth of talent across both teams.
As the Seahawks look forward, they prepare to host Cairns and Bryn Athyn in the upcoming week, aiming to bounce back from this closely contested defeat.
