LA PLATA, MD—In a recent sentencing at the Charles County Circuit Court, Mehki Joseph Smith, a 24-year-old Waldorf resident, was handed a life sentence with all but 35 years suspended for the first-degree murder of Michael Anthony Dodson, Sr. and the use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence. Additionally, Smith will serve a concurrent 15-year term for a second-degree burglary conviction.
The sentence, delivered by Judge Donine Carrington Martin on Wednesday, follows Smith's guilty plea on January 25 for both the murder and the burglary, which involved the theft of an AR-style rifle from a local firearms dealer.
The tragic sequence of events leading to Dodson's murder began on October 25, 2022, when Smith, following a physical altercation with Dodson's son, left the scene only to return later armed with a handgun. Despite an attempt to intervene, Dodson was fatally shot by Smith in a parking lot on Old Washington Road, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services pronounced Dodson deceased at the scene.
Assistant State's Attorney Jonathan Beattie emphasized the gravity of the choices leading to the fatal shooting during sentencing. "These cases are about decisions," Beattie told the court, highlighting the stark contrast between Smith's decision to "retrieve a weapon and escalate the situation" and the victim's attempt to de-escalate the conflict.
Before delivering her decision, Judge Carrington Martin addressed Smith, underlining the repeated decisions he made to pull the trigger: "Twenty-five bullets; twenty-five times you had a choice."
Following his prison term, Smith is slated for five years of supervised probation. The cases, referenced under case numbers C-08-CR-22-000630 and C-08-CR-23-000342, have concluded with these sentences, marking a somber resolution to a series of violent and tragic events.
