From Lexington Park to Guam: The Naval Career of Stephanie Blyleven

GUAM - Chief Petty Officer Stephanie Blyleven, originally from Lexington Park, Maryland, is currently serving the U.S. Navy at Naval Base Guam, a pivotal location for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Having joined the Navy 12 years ago, Blyleven's tenure is marked by her rise to a key role as a yeoman and her commitment to her sailors and service.

A 2007 graduate of Great Mills High School, Blyleven credits her upbringing in a military-rich community with preparing her for the diversity and challenges of naval life. "I learned about the importance of diversity and working with people from all walks of life," Blyleven shared. Her father, a former Navy serviceman, inspired her military career, providing a familial tie to her service.

The strategic importance of Guam and its naval base is underscored by its role within the U.S. Pacific Fleet, headquartered in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The fleet, covering 100 million square miles from the Arctic Circle to the Indian Ocean, includes over 200 ships, nearly 1,200 aircraft, and more than 130,000 personnel. These resources are critical to U.S. national security and the global economy, with 90% of worldwide commerce by sea and key internet infrastructures, such as undersea fiber optic cables, reliant on maritime security.

Admiral Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations, emphasized the Navy's ongoing mission: "We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day. Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs."

Reflecting on her service, Blyleven is proud of her accomplishments, particularly her advancement to chief petty officer, her role in her sailors' growth, and her personal life, including meeting her husband through the Navy. Her service has been a journey of personal and professional growth, travel, and extending a helping hand to others.

Gratitude for her career and opportunities is something Blyleven often expresses, especially towards her father. "He was my biggest influence in helping me join the Navy," she added.

Blyleven's story is a testament to the impact of military service on personal development and the broader security goals of the United States.
