LEONARDTOWN, MD - In a significant police operation on Sunday, James Errick Barnes, a 52-year-old resident of Lexington Park, MD, was apprehended by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. The arrest followed a routine traffic stop in Lexington Park, highlighting the ongoing proactive patrols by local law enforcement aimed at maintaining public safety.
Deputy Joseph Senatore, patrolling the area, initiated the traffic stop after observing a Ford Taurus disobeying a traffic signal at the intersection of Great Mills Road and North Essex Drive. The situation escalated when Barnes, the vehicle's operator, attempted to discreetly pass an item to his passenger, raising suspicion among the officers.
Further investigation revealed that Barnes was operating the vehicle without a valid driver's license, and the car itself was unregistered. A search conducted by Corporal Lacey Smith and K9 Kyra unearthed narcotics and a brass knuckle knife, leading to Barnes's arrest on multiple charges.
The charges against Barnes include the concealment of a dangerous weapon, possession of controlled dangerous substances (CDS) excluding cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additionally, Barnes faces 12 traffic violations under Maryland Vehicle Law, underscoring the gravity of the offenses.
Barnes was subsequently taken to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he awaits further legal proceedings. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug and weapon-related crimes within the community.
