LEONARDTOWN, MD - In a significant move towards enhancing mental health awareness and services in St. Mary's County, the Rotary Club of Lexington Park has named the St. Mary's County Health Hub its 2023 "Signature Project." The club has awarded a $50,000 grant to the St. Mary's County Health Department (SMCHD) to expand the outreach of the Health Hub, thus ensuring more community members are aware of and can access its comprehensive mental health services, among other programs.
The generous grant is set to facilitate a multi-faceted approach to bolster mental health awareness within the community. A notable aspect of this initiative is the training of Rotary Club volunteers who will serve as ambassadors. These ambassadors are tasked with promoting the wide array of mental health resources available at the Health Hub in various community settings and workplaces, effectively bridging the gap between those in need and the services available to assist them.
The St. Mary's County Health Hub is renowned for its broad spectrum of services, which include walk-in evaluations for mental health and addiction issues, crisis counseling, primary care medical services, and an array of community services. These services are tailored to address the non-medical aspects of life that significantly impact overall health, ensuring comprehensive care and support for community members. The initiative aims to enhance the visibility of these services and improve accessibility for those in need, fostering a healthier and more informed community.
Dr. Meena Brewster, the St. Mary's County Health Officer, expressed gratitude for the partnership with the Rotary Club of Lexington Park, emphasizing its impact on mental health advancement within the community. "The funding support and Rotarian ambassador initiative will help many of our community members get connected to the health and wellness services of the Health Hub," said Dr. Brewster.
Echoing this sentiment, Ms. Wanda Smith, the 23/24 Club President of the Rotary Club of Lexington Park, highlighted the collective commitment to community well-being that underpins this partnership. "This collaboration symbolizes our shared dedication to building a stronger, healthier community for all," Ms. Smith stated. She further emphasized breaking down barriers and fostering understanding to champion mental health initiatives that will have a lasting impact on the community.
This partnership represents a proactive step towards addressing mental health challenges within the local community, showcasing the power of collaboration between non-profit organizations and health departments. By combining resources and efforts, the Rotary Club of Lexington Park and the St. Mary's County Health Department aim to create a lasting positive change in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues.
