ANNAPOLIS, Md., February 7, 2024 – Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman today announced the launch of Maryland Tax Connect, an innovative online platform designed to streamline tax filing and payment processes for businesses. This new portal marks a significant step in the Comptroller's efforts to modernize Maryland's tax system, enhancing security, efficiency, and accessibility for taxpayers.
Maryland Tax Connect is set to transform taxpayer interactions with the Office of the Comptroller by offering a range of online services that businesses can access from desktops or mobile devices. The services include filing tax returns, retrieving tax information, making online payments, updating personal information, viewing filing and tax history, registering a business, and applying for or renewing business licenses and sales and use tax exemptions.
Comptroller Lierman emphasized the convenience and security of the new system, stating, "Maryland Tax Connect has the functionality consumers have come to expect with financial transactions, from mobile banking to online shopping. I am excited to continue our push to make government work better." The portal is part of a broader initiative to overhaul the state's outdated tax processing systems, aiming to deliver a more innovative, accessible, and efficient tax service.
On its first day of operation, the portal witnessed nearly 5,000 new business accounts being created, around 400 business returns filed, and 115 new businesses registered, indicating strong initial engagement from the business community. The Comptroller's office is also sending welcome letters to businesses previously registered with the old filing system, providing additional information about the new portal and a personal identification number (PIN) for easier access. Businesses have the option to access the portal as guests as well.
The introduction of Maryland Tax Connect comes with the promise of phased enhancements, planning to incorporate all tax types, including personal income tax, into the platform by 2026. This gradual rollout aims to ensure a smooth transition and continuous improvement of the system.
The launch also signifies the restoration of the Comptroller's ability to process refunds and perform other critical functions, which had been temporarily paused during the transition. Tax return processing resumed this week, with the office processing returns in the order they were received.
Businesses seeking more information about Maryland Tax Connect are encouraged to visit the platform's website and consult the frequently updated FAQs section. This move towards a more digital, user-friendly tax system reflects Maryland's commitment to utilizing technology to improve governmental efficiency and taxpayer experience.
