HUNTINGTOWN, MD — A tragic motor vehicle accident claimed the life of an 81-year-old local resident in Huntingtown, Maryland, on the morning of February 28, 2024. Calvert County Sheriff's Office Patrol Bureau deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Hunting Creek Road and Deep Landing Road at approximately 11:41 a.m. following reports of a severe single-vehicle crash.

Upon their arrival, first responders found the driver of a 2018 Chevy Silverado with life-threatening injuries. The operator, identified as Charles Michael Sullivan of Huntingtown, MD, was quickly transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The initial investigation into the crash, conducted by the Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Team, indicates that Sullivan was traveling eastbound on Deep Landing Road as he approached the intersection with Hunting Creek Road. It appears Sullivan failed to decelerate or halt at the stop sign, causing the vehicle to cross Hunting Creek Road, veer off the roadway, and collide with several trees.

The early findings suggest that the cause of the accident might be related to a medical issue experienced by Sullivan. The investigation is ongoing, with Master Deputy Jeffrey Hardesty of the Crash Reconstruction Team leading the inquiry into the precise circumstances of the crash.

The Calvert County Sheriff's Office is reaching out to the community for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who has any additional information is encouraged to contact Master Deputy Hardesty directly at 410-535-2800 or via email at Jeffrey.Hardesty@calvertcountymd.gov.

This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the unforeseen hazards that can arise on the road, potentially linked to health-related issues among drivers. The local community and the Calvert County Sheriff's Office extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Charles Michael Sullivan during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, further details may be released to provide insight into the crash and any underlying medical conditions that may have contributed to this fatal event. The Calvert County Sheriff's Office emphasizes the importance of community assistance in piecing together the moments leading up to the accident and encourages anyone with information to come forward.

This incident highlights the critical need for awareness and caution on the roads, particularly regarding the health and well-being of drivers. The Calvert County community mourns the loss of one of its members and looks to this investigation to help prevent future tragedies of this nature.
