Shakespeare and I have been best friends for a very long time. Sometimes I miss performing his plays. But recently I just had an experience that reminded me of how much I enjoy performing. SocialShakespeare is a Tumblr group that does readings on Skype and publishes them for all to listen to.
I was cast as Sir Hugh Evans in The Merry Wives of Windsor. And let me tell you, it was the best fun I've had in a long time.
For those of you unfamiliar with their play, I'll break it down for you.
Sir John Falstaff, a character from Henry V, decides to seduce two married—already married—women because he wants to get ahold of their husbands' money. Thankfully the two women, Mistress Ford & Mistress Page learn of his intentions and, with the help of various colorful characters, decide to teach the knight a lesson in humility. There's also another subplot dealing with the courting of Anne, Mistress Page's lovely daughter and her various suitors. In addition to these convoluted plots, Shakespeare offers his views on jealousy, love and marriage. Honestly, I have no idea why it hasn't been performed more often than the other comedies.
The actors of Social Shakespeare are some of the nicest actors I ever had the chance to work with. They were incredibly talented as well as being very warm and welcoming. And playing Sir Hugh was the best fun I've had in a role.
If you guys get a chance, I recommend you listening to the most recent recording as well as Merry Wives.
And dear readers, I wish you the best. Shakespeare has always been a source of comfort to me. I hope he will be for you.
