KELSEYVILLE — The Kelseyville Knights threatened in nearly every inning but could plate only one run in a season-opening 2-1 varsity baseball loss to the Healdsburg Greyhounds on Thursday afternoon at Lloyd Larson Field in Kelseyville.
Healdsburg scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the third on a strike three passed ball that allowed a runner from third base to race home, snapping a 1-1 tie.
Both teams scored in the first inning. Kelseyville's run in the bottom half came on a two-out Jon Dougherty single that scored Kyle Watkins from second base.
The Knights stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
"We killed ourselves on the basepaths (two runners picked off) and didn't have the timely hits you need to win games," Kelseyville head coach Billy Shaul said. "Our pitching was solid and we played good enough defense to win."
Three Kelseyville pitchers -- starter Dougherty and relievers Zayne Barker and Brock Barrick -- limited Healdsburg to six hits.
"They had a couple of good, timely hits and that was the difference," Shaul said of the Greyhounds.
Dougherty allowed three hits and one earned run in his four innings on the mound. He struck out six and walked one. Barker worked scoreless fifth and sixth innings while Barrick blanked the Greyhounds in the seventh.
The Knights finished with seven hits, led by Watkins (2-for-4) and Reme Strong, who went 1-for-3 with a double. His double in the third inning came moments after a Kelseyville player was picked off second base.
Kelseyville (0-1) returns to action Friday with a non-league doubleheader at Colusa. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
