The Georgia Cotton Commission's (GCC) Live Exploration: Georgia Cotton event will educate students about cotton and its impact on Georgia's economy. It will also enlighten some about a potential future career in agriculture, says Caroline Gentry, an education and outreach specialist at GCC.
"There's so many opportunities out there that kids don't even think about from sales reps to working at John Deere or being an engineer. There's a lot," Gentry said. "I grew up in a rural community but had no idea of the opportunities in agriculture until I just fell into this position. Now I'm super passionate about how much there is out there, and it's not talked about a lot; at least from where I'm from. I can't speak of other places. When kids are going to see their high school counselor and try to plan a college and what they want to do, agriculture was never introduced to me as an option."
But GCC, in collaboration with Georgia Public Broadcasting, is taking the initiative and introducing agriculture to students across Georgia. The one-hour event will be livestreamed on May 11 at 10 a.m. Within the one-hour segment there will be pre-recorded video of prior interviews and B-roll. There will also be a live portion segment where students can interact with industry leaders.
Students will be encouraged to ask questions of the experts who will be featured.

Georgia Cotton Live Exploration will be available on demand online after May 11 with supplemental classroom resources for grades K-12. This program will be televised on GPB-TV and live streamed on gpb.org/cotton.
