Daily writing prompt
What positive emotion do you feel most often?
I'm no expert by any means, but often when the topic of emotions gets raised, it seems we default for unknown reasons to discussing emotions that are rather negative in nature. Sadness, fear, anger, grief and sorrow more often than not, top the discussion schedule.
Perhaps it's the fact that often people(not all mind you) love to wallow somewhat in their own misery. We all know or have known at least one person who when asked how are they doing, head off for the next 37 minutes across the table at the coffee shop about every negative feeling, emotion and sore joint in their body.
So, why don't we go at length about positive emotions? Joy, happiness, gratitude and emotions like that. Sure, some people are wired to be positive all the time, while others may have chosen that route in order to lift themselves up.
Often when asked,"Hey - how are you doing?" how many of us simply respond with "Oh, I'm fine or I'm doing okay." Pretty broad and not very specific.
Moving on, the positive emotion that I feel most of the time is contentment.
One definition of contentment I came across is: "It can be described as a sense of peace and fulfillment that comes from accepting and appreciating the present moment, rather than constantly striving for something else. It is a positive emotion that can lead to greater happiness, gratitude, and overall well-being."
The part that sticks out for me or resonants with me is "appreciating the present moment." Over all the years that I've been hoofing it across the face of the planet, I've come to the realization that the present moment we're/you're in is all that we have. We can't go back in time to change or relive it, nor can we project ourselves through some science fiction time machine to be six months into the future.
The present is it and we'd best live it to the fullest extent possible. It's not that we shouldn't plan for the future or set goals that might lead to a higher paying job or more money in investments further along. I think those are all fine and positive elements in work towards
But, if all and I mean all of our focus is so laser-pointed to something that doesn't even exist yet, I can guarantee that you'll miss those many of the great things that are occurring in the present - right before your eyes.
Be content with the present and live it to its fullest. You're here today, but can you or anyone say with absolute certainty that you will be here tomorrow or even an hour from now?
