An Anne Arundel County resident recently won a $50,000 third-tier prize in the Powerball drawing, attributing his luck to a family tradition of playing the lottery. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, shared that his late uncle, a $1,000,000 Maryland Lotto winner in the 1980s, inspired him to continue playing the same numbers.
Purchasing his tickets at 24-7 Tobacco & Grocery on Mayo Road in Edgewater, the winner discovered his fortune when he scanned his ticket at the same retailer. "I saw that I won $50,000 on the screen. It was the first thing that popped up," he explained. This moment of surprise came after years of following in his uncle's footsteps, who consistently played the same numbers weekly until his big win decades ago.
Though his uncle's numbers did not prove lucky this time, the winning ticket was actually a quick-pick, an automatic number selection, which he purchased as part of an $18 ticket for the early August drawings. It included three lines, and while the first two did not yield results, the quick-pick line matched four white balls and the Powerball.
The local winner, who works in delivery services and enjoys hunting, remarked on the unexpected nature of his win, feeling as if his uncle was still watching over him. Despite the win, he remains unsure about how he will use the prize money.
Lottery officials highlighted that the Powerball continues to attract hopeful players with the upcoming draw on Saturday, August 24, featuring an estimated jackpot of $34 million, or a $16.8 million cash option. Additionally, a promotion running until September 3 offers Powerball purchasers a chance to win a free $2 Mega Millions ticket.
As players like the recent winner from southern Anne Arundel County demonstrate, the inspiration and traditions of past lottery players can still influence today's hopefuls, weaving a narrative of family, fortune, and the dreams that connect them.
