A proposal to rezone the public greenspace at Gore Avenue and Union Street has been met with stiff opposition from across the Strathcona and Chinatown Communities. The City's Real Estate and Facilities Management Department has proposed turning 722 Gore Avenue into a temporary firehall annex.
An online consultation was held from July 3 to July 16, 2024, and many concerns were raised in the Q&A Section of the ShapeYourCity page for the rezoning. There have been a number of information signs placed on the greenspace (several photos are included in the slideshow above) to provide additional context and facts about the rezoning. There's even a 'People's Park" sign that was placed on the greenspace.
Strathcona already has the lowest amount of greenspace coverage for neighbourhoods in Vancouver. Community members are wondering if the staff can provide an alternate site for this annex. For the record, it remains to see what the City's response will be to the opposition? Will staff just double down and just go ahead with the rezoning? Or will there be some accommodation made to save the greenspace at 722 Gore Avenue?
An online petition to save the greenspace over converting it to a firehall annex is available at this link: https://www.change.org/p/strathcona-chinatown-protect-vital-green-space-over-a-fire-truck-annex
