South Wake Conservationists were given a very special treat with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of animal care at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham on a beautiful Saturday afternoon Aug. 24th. Led by Stepheny Hines, Program Mgr., and Andrea Tejada, Assoc. Program Mgr., 28 adults and 6 children had an amazing introduction the characteristics, needs, care, and habits of ring-tailed lemurs, black bears, and red wolves housed there. Animal care staff, Kate and Michaela, explained the many facets of care, feeding, enrichment, and much more of the animals they care for every day.
They have a pair of adult red wolves, with five five-month-old pups, as well as three black bears and seven lemurs maintained in thoughtfully-designed large natural spaces. Two of the red wolves from here have gone to the Red Wolf Center in Columbia, N.C., located on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern North Carolina, and are featured on the web cam on NCWFs website!
