A DJ blasting out his best playlist filled with the biggest and best oldies hits of the '60s and '70s provided the background ambiance for the over 1,000 people who attended the 7th annual Cruisin' into the Next Chapter Classic Car and Truck Show out in front of the Yolo Branch Library located at 37750 Sacramento St. in Yolo.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, community members of all ages and creeds flooded to the intersection of Sacramento and Second Street, conveniently located within a five-minute drive from Woodland, to check out an array of over 125 classic cars and trucks.
"This is a wonderful turnout," said the Yolo Branch Library's car show coordinator Meg Sheldon. "Despite some early rain, everyone came anyway. It's turned into such a wonderful day. People are really enjoying themselves and being happy, enjoying everything the show offers. I saw a lot of people greeting one another as if they hadn't seen each other in a while. The joy of those moments is really rewarding.
"This event is just such a wonderful time for the people in the community to come together. I love the way families, car owners, and the community come together at this event. It has a wonderful feel to it."
The free admission event was hosted in conjunction by the Friends of the Yolo Branch Library and the Yolo County Library, which serve the communities of Yolo, Zamora, Dunnigan and other surrounding areas.
"It's Yolo's biggest event of the year," Sheldon said. "It's just a special time and a really positive community event."
The wide variety of registered automobiles on display, including classic cars and trucks, low riders, muscle cars, fire engines, antique fire trucks, and tractors, allowed people to admire them from afar or up close.
According to Sheldon, all of the event's proceeds go to the Friends of the Yolo Branch Library, who in turn support the library in making it "the best it can be."
"The main reason for this show is to the library," Sheldon said. "We do it to bring awareness of the library and its services as well as the support the Friends of the Library bring to the library. Another bonus reason is bringing the community together."
Supporters and partners of the car show included Yolo County as a whole, Cache Creek High School, Welding & Fabrication Yolo, the Fire Protection District, Yolo Market, Rockwell Sound & Lighting, Master Tech, Japanese Auto Specialists, George and Felipe Anaya, AAA Electrical Solutions, Precision Auto Care, Broward Builders, Inc., Muller Ag, THE OG, Cache Creek Monuments, Knotty Wood Barbecue Co., Andrade Electric, Inc., Doan's Auto Body, Road Trip Bar & Grill, O'Reilly Auto Parts, VC Upholstery and the Yolo Market in Yolo.
"This event is the kind of thing where if I ask for something, people just say yes," Sheldon said.
Alongside the car show was a 71-prize raffle, a free book stand for children, a youth lowrider bike show and much more. Sheldon is proud of how far the show has come since its humble beginnings nine years ago.
"I'm really proud of how this show has grown, not just in the number of people here or the number of cars registered, but in the variety of things we have to offer people who come," she said. "It's a car show, but it's so much more. The number of people engaged in making it happen has also grown."
Sheldon made sure to thank the 80 or so volunteers there that day and the 15 or so who helped put on the show throughout the week leading up to the event.
"We get really good reactions from the community," Sheldon said. "One of our prior team members who used to live here and moved to Oregon mentioned that two or three people there had mentioned this car show in Yolo as being one of their favorite shows to go to. The people who registered a car have also been so wonderful. They always comment that it is one of the shows they really like.
"I think it's because the show's location is right in the middle of the town. They liked the small-town feel of it."
