The Town of Chesapeake Beach has announced the awarding of $5,000 in scholarships to four exemplary students from Northern High School as part of its annual scholarship program dedicated to fostering youth interest in environmental education and public service. This initiative honors Senate President Emeritus Thomas Vincent Miller Jr., a stalwart supporter of youth initiatives and a distinguished resident of Chesapeake Beach.
The scholarship program aligns with Miller's vision, particularly reflecting his commitment as evidenced by his founding of the Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps in 2010. The program aims to cultivate a dedication to public service among young residents, encouraging them to contribute positively to their communities and the broader societal landscape.

This year's scholarship recipients include Charles Dunn from St. Mary's College of Maryland, who will study Musical Performance and Spanish; Ava Ballard from New York University, focusing on Dance and Psychology; Jasmine Simpson from the University of Pennsylvania, who will pursue Environmental Science and Public Policy; and Jaidyn Wheelock from Florida Gulf Coast University, slated to study Forensic Science.
Applicants were required to submit essays or poems reflecting on their personal interpretation of public service, an integral part of the application process that demonstrated the candidates' thoughtful engagement with the concept. The selection criteria also emphasized their academic achievements, leadership qualities, and community involvement.
In their submissions, the students articulated diverse views on public service. One awardee described it as a platform for "giving back to the community everything we are blessed to have," emphasizing the role of public service in addressing societal issues and fostering change. Another recipient likened public service to an "umbrella shielding the suffering world," highlighting their personal growth through roles as a tutor, leader, and volunteer.
The Town Council and the community congratulate these young individuals on their achievements and look forward to their future contributions to society.
