That train of thought led me back to how I finally achieved sobriety. What stood out, as clear as a spotlight, was the moment I truly decided I was done. There was no longer any "maybe" or room for possibility. I no longer needed the crutch. I finally made up my mind to listen to my inner voice, and that decision has guided me to where I am today—5 years, 5 months, and 30 days sober after 40 years of abuse. One of the neat things about having a blog is the ability to look back and see glimpses of where I was at different points in life. That's how I came across this gem, which I posted just five days before starting my sober journey: "There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open."
