In a thrilling display of late-game heroics, the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, snapped their four-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory over the Somerset Patriots at Prince George's Stadium on Tuesday night.
The game reached its dramatic peak in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Bowie trailing 6-5, John Rhodes, the Orioles' No. 20 prospect, ended his recent slump by hitting a decisive two-run homer. The home run, which came with two outs and two strikes off Somerset's right-handed reliever Luis Velasquez, catapulted Bowie into a 7-6 lead. Velasquez, who took the loss, dropped to a 3-3 record for the season.
The Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, had initially taken an early advantage with a first-inning solo homer by Spencer Jones. However, Bowie responded quickly, surging to a 4-1 lead by the end of the second inning. This early rally featured an RBI single from Silas Ardoin, a run-scoring wild pitch from Somerset's starter Trystan Vrieling, and a two-run homer by Jud Fabian, his 16th of the season. Fabian's blast positioned him as both the Eastern League's active home run leader and a co-leader overall.
Despite Somerset tying the game in the third inning following a two-run homer from Jesus Rodriguez, the scoreline remained tight, eventually reaching 5-5 after exchanges of RBI doubles from both teams. Somerset briefly regained the lead in the eighth via a solo homer from Anthony Seigler, but Bowie's late comeback sealed their victory.
Noteworthy performances included Bowie's Samuel Basallo, the Orioles' No. 2 prospect, who led the game with three hits. This marked his fourth three-hit game of the season, tying him for seventh in the Eastern League in hits.
Following this intense encounter, the Baysox will continue their six-game series against the Patriots, looking to build on this momentum. The next game is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, featuring Bowie's Peter Van Loon against Somerset's Bailey Dees.
In addition to the ongoing series, the week at Prince George's Stadium is packed with events, including the 25th Annual Navy Night and the Baytober Craft Beer Fest, promising plenty of entertainment for fans beyond the diamond.
