LEONARDTOWN, MD — The annual National Night Out (NNO), an event focused on enhancing community and police relations, is set to take place in St. Mary's County on August 6, 2024. The event, which emphasizes strengthening the rapport between neighbors and law enforcement, aims to foster a safer, more caring community atmosphere.
Organized in collaboration with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office (SMCSO), this year's National Night Out will feature numerous local communities including Birch Way, Breton Bay, and Cecil's Mill among others. The event is celebrated across the nation but holds particular significance in local settings like Leonardtown, where community ties are paramount.
Commissioner President Randy Guy expressed gratitude towards local law enforcement for their continual efforts to engage with and protect the community. "We hope all participating communities have a fun National Night Out!" he remarked, highlighting the positive interactions the event fosters between police and community members.
Residents wishing to have their neighborhoods participate have until August 2, 2024, to register. Inquiries can be directed to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office via email at smcnno@stmaryscountymd.gov. More information about the initiative and its objectives can be found at the National Night Out official website here.
The designated communities participating range from residential cul-de-sacs like Forest Way Cul-de-sac in Wildewood to larger neighborhoods like The Woods at Myrtle Point and Westbury. Each participating area aims to bring residents together under positive circumstances, creating an environment where safety and community welfare are the priorities.
National Night Out, celebrated on the first Tuesday of August each year, has been a key community-building campaign in the United States since its inception. It seeks to make neighborhoods safer by fostering a sense of camaraderie and by enhancing the relationship between the community and law enforcement officials.
As preparations for the event continue, the involvement of local neighborhoods is crucial to its success, ensuring that the goals of NNO — community safety and cooperation — are met comprehensively throughout St. Mary's County.
