After canceling its annual Independence Day fireworks show last week due to serious injuries a pyrotechnics contractor sustained, Woodland rescheduled its show for Saturday at Woodland High School located at 21 N. West St.
Gates will open at 7 p.m. and the fireworks begin around 9:15 p.m. with kids activities, food and drinks being available throughout the night. A city press release encouraged people to bring chairs or blankets to sit on the grass.
No personal fireworks, alcohol, glass or pets are allowed at the event.
"An instrumental member of the pyrotechnic firm that helps us put on a big show like the one people expect on Fourth of July was hospitalized due to an incident the night before," Spencer Bowen, communication and strategic policies manager for Woodland, emphasized regarding last week's cancelation. "I'm frankly not sure if he is still in the hospital or not… but it was serious enough and to a key enough person that we were forced to reschedule."
However, Bowen noted that the city had several other events scheduled throughout the city that were successful despite high temperatures including the city's annual Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station No. 3 and a free swim fest at the Charles Brooks Community Swim Center.
"I had a call with Fire Chief [Eric] Zane who said it wasn't quite a record attendance, but the highest in quite some time, so people definitely came out to that," Bowen said regarding the breakfast. "Folks who went to the ice cream social at the Community Center as well as the public free swim at Brooks Community Pool both said it was 'popping.' We anticipated the pool and ice cream would be popular on a hot day and they were."
Furthermore, Bowen said the city was able to work with a different pyrotechnics company for the Saturday show since they are no longer in such high demand following the holiday. He argued that the city prioritized rescheduling the show because of how popular these public celebrations are with residents.
"We know that the Independence Day fireworks show is super important to a lot of our community members and we are committed to still delivering that," he remarked. "Hopefully, folks will have a fun and safe time celebrating just a week and a couple of days late."
