LEONARDTOWN, MD – Sheriff Steve Hall proudly announced that two officials from the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center (SMCDRC) were honored at the 2024 Annual Maryland Correctional Administrators Association (MCAA) Conference earlier this month. Warden Mary Ann Thompson and Corporal Joshua Crow received prestigious awards recognizing their exemplary service and commitment to the field of corrections.

Warden Thompson was awarded the esteemed Dewitt Award, her second time receiving this honor. The Dewitt Award, named after Cecil County Sheriff Jack Dewitt (1974-1990), is presented to a corrections professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service. Thompson first received this accolade in 2015. Her career in law enforcement began in 1984 with the Federal Bureau of Investigations' Washington Field Office Division. She joined the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division in 1989 and rose to become the Warden of the 350-bed SMCDRC. In her role, Thompson provides strategic advice and oversight for the planning, leadership, and management of the facility.

Corporal Joshua Crow was named MCAA Officer of the Year, recognizing his flexibility and dedication since joining the SMCDRC in 2017. Crow has served in various capacities, including Intelligence Liaison, Fire and Safety Officer, Transport Officer, and Booking Officer. His diverse experience and commitment to the facility's operations have made him an invaluable member of the team.

Sheriff Steve Hall praised the achievements of both Thompson and Crow, stating, "We are incredibly proud of Warden Thompson and Corporal Crow. Their awards underscore the dedication and professionalism they demonstrate daily." Hall further highlighted the significance of Thompson's award, noting, "Warden Thompson's distinction as a two-time recipient of the Dewitt Award showcases her sustained effectiveness over nearly a decade and reflects the high regard and respect she commands within the corrections community across the state."

The recognition of Thompson and Crow at the MCAA Conference underscores the high standards and exceptional service provided by the staff at the SMCDRC. Their awards highlight the facility's commitment to excellence in corrections and the dedication of its personnel to maintaining a safe and secure environment for both inmates and staff.

The MCAA Conference serves as a platform for correctional professionals across Maryland to share knowledge, discuss best practices, and recognize outstanding contributions within the field. This year's conference continued the tradition of honoring those who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to their roles.

Warden Thompson's career trajectory and accomplishments serve as an inspiration to many in the corrections field. Her leadership and strategic vision have significantly contributed to the effective management of the SMCDRC. Corporal Crow's diverse skill set and unwavering dedication have also played a crucial role in the facility's operations, ensuring that all aspects of inmate management and safety are handled with the utmost professionalism.

The accolades received by Thompson and Crow are a testament to their hard work and the support of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. As the corrections community in Maryland continues to evolve and face new challenges, the exemplary service of individuals like Thompson and Crow will be vital in shaping the future of the field.
