I've split my time this week between Devils Lake and Lake Sakakawea. I'd say the walleye fishing has been good on both, but I still feel like we are a little off from a rockstar bite on either.
Devils Lake proved itself as a top walleye fishery this week while casting shallow cranks. When the conditions were right, and you got yourself into the right spot, it was superb. You had to grind a bit to get your bites, but when you did the fish were really nice! The bobber bite also remained extremely strong.
Lake Sakakawea hasn't disappointed at all. I've only gotten to fish it twice this week, with Sunday being cancelled due to the wind. However, if you got yourself in the right areas at the right time the bite was spectacular!
The fish on Sakakawea for the most part were large! I even saw a couple 28-inch-plus fish coming into our guide boats. The one thing I did notice is the fish are really moving up and down in the water column. Do not get married to any particular depth. Slow death rigs with both crawlers and minnows caught fish.
On a side note: Both bodies of water are extremely busy right now. Give others space to operate. Another thing I've noticed on both bodies of water are double dippers. Please respect the resources. If I see you at the cleaning station twice in a day, I promise you I'm calling you in!
I want to thank a couple of the ND Game and Fish officers for being present at the ramps. I've been checked probably half a dozen times already this year due to the fact I've pretty much had my boat in the water every day since March 25th. Your presence at the landings is appreciated!
