LA PLATA, MD – George Christopher Floyd, 44, was convicted of second-degree murder and false imprisonment by a Charles County jury on June 27, 2024, for the death of his 18-year-old stepson, Triston Treshaun Irvin. The verdict came after a four-day trial and roughly 2.5 hours of jury deliberation.
State's Attorney Tony Covington expressed his satisfaction with the verdict, stating, "Thankfully, the jury saw this case for what it was: an unjustifiable, outrageous taking of a young, innocent life. How can anyone, including this defendant, George Floyd, even think to put someone in a chokehold for 20 minutes and expect the victim to survive? Everyone knows you can't, and this defendant knew it too. He didn't care. Pure depravity which amounted to murder."
The incident occurred on October 8, 2023, when officers responded to a residence in Waldorf after receiving a report of a subject not breathing. Upon arrival, officers found Irvin unresponsive on the bathroom floor. Floyd, the victim's stepfather, told officers he had put Irvin in a neck restraint because the teenager was trying to run away. Emergency Medical Services provided aid and transported Irvin to the hospital, where he later died due to the neck restraint.
Investigations revealed that the previous night, Floyd, the victim's mother, and Irvin had a verbal disagreement but eventually went to bed without further incident. Early the next morning, around 5 a.m., Floyd entered Irvin's bedroom and demanded that he clean his room. A confrontation ensued, during which Floyd placed Irvin in a neck restraint. The victim's mother, hearing the commotion, sought assistance from three of Irvin's friends who were sleeping over and his teenage brother.
Floyd instructed the young men to help restrain Irvin and pray over him. He also directed one of Irvin's friends to fetch olive oil, which he used to anoint Irvin with a cross on his forehead. Despite Irvin lying motionless on the floor, Floyd maintained the neck restraint for approximately 15-20 minutes. When Floyd finally released Irvin and noticed he was unresponsive, he and the young men attempted to render aid but did not immediately call emergency services. About 5-10 minutes later, when Irvin remained unresponsive, Floyd called 911.
Floyd is scheduled for sentencing on August 16, 2024, and faces a potential prison term of over 75 years.
