St. Mary's College of Maryland's women's rowing team interim head coach, Nik Meyer, along with assistant coaches Nancy Fechtig and Ruth O'Connell, received prestigious regional awards from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) on June 10. Meyer was honored with the CRCA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year award, while Fechtig and O'Connell were named the CRCA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Staff of the Year.
Meyer's tenure as interim head coach began in mid-January following the departure of former head coach Anna Lindgren-Streicher, who took a similar role at Hamilton College. Since stepping into the role, Meyer has been instrumental in leading the Seahawks to significant achievements, including their second Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) championship title on April 28. This win marked a pivotal moment in the program's eighth year as a varsity sport.
Under the guidance of Meyer, Fechtig, and O'Connell, the team secured a spot in the NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Championships for the second time in three years. St. Mary's College achieved an eighth-place finish at the 2024 NCAA Championships, with the second varsity 8+ team capturing the petit final for seventh place overall. The varsity 8+ team also had a notable performance, finishing second at the Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, on May 11.
The coaching trio's efforts have been recognized not only with awards but also in their ability to mentor and develop top-tier rowers. This season, they coached four All-MARC selections, including three First Team honorees. Their leadership has been pivotal in elevating the program's profile on a national level.
St. Mary's women's rowing team has consistently appeared in the Pocock CRCA Division III Coaches Polls, making the final poll of the season on June 3 with their highest ranking of 14th. The team's poll placements throughout the season were as follows:
- April 29: Received Votes (30)
- May 6: 15th
- May 13: Received Votes (30)
- May 20: Received Votes (30)
- June 3: 14th
The recognition from the CRCA highlights the dedication and hard work of the coaching staff, as well as the resilience and talent of the athletes they mentor. Meyer, who was also named the 2024 MARC Women's Rowing Coach of the Year, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic vision in his interim role, fostering a competitive and cohesive team environment.
The success of the St. Mary's College women's rowing team under Meyer's leadership reflects the program's growing reputation and the potential for future achievements. The coaching staff's commitment to excellence and their ability to inspire and develop their athletes have been key factors in the team's impressive performances this season.
As the program continues to build on its recent successes, the recognition from the CRCA serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the coaches and the athletes. With Meyer, Fechtig, and O'Connell at the helm, the future looks bright for the St. Mary's College women's rowing team.
