The Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, faced a tough defeat against the Reading Fightin' Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, losing 10-3 at FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday night.
Baysox Take Early Lead but Struggle to Maintain Momentum
Bowie (2-2, 34-38) initially took the lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Matthew Etzel. However, Reading (2-2, 33-39) responded quickly, scoring three runs in the second inning with a two-out, three-run homer by Ethan Wilson off Bowie's starting right-hander Alex Pham (L, 3-2).
Pham, ranked as the Orioles' No. 24 prospect, settled down after giving up the home run, finishing with 4.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on three hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts. Pham has now accumulated 84 strikeouts this season, placing him third in the Eastern League.
Reading's Fifth Inning Surge
Reading opened the game wide in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits against right-handed reliever Nick Richmond. The inning featured a solo home run by Marcus Lee Sang, an RBI single by Otto Kemp, and a three-run homer by Robert Moore, extending their lead to 8-1.
Matthew Etzel delivered a notable performance for Bowie, hitting his second home run of the series with an opposite-field solo shot to left in the sixth inning. Etzel, the Orioles' 10th round pick in 2023, recorded a Double-A high with three hits on the night.
Fightin' Phils Secure Victory
Despite an RBI single from TT Bowens in the seventh, bringing his team-leading RBI total to 39, Reading scored two additional runs in the seventh to secure their victory. Reading's right-handed starter Robinson Pina (W, 9-2) pitched six strong innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out six, earning his league-leading ninth win of the season.
