Summer Youth Art Camp offers free classes for kids and teens
The summer season is a time for children and teenagers to explore their creativity, and now they have the perfect opportunity. Introducing the Summer Youth Art Camp, a Lake County Arts Council program that offers free art classes for kids and teens.
This exciting initiative aims to provide young individuals with a platform to express themselves through various art forms. From painting and drawing to creative writing, there is something for everyone to discover and enjoy.
The Summer Youth Art Camp is open to children and teenagers aged 5 to 18 years old. It will run two weeks, starting from June 17 to 21 at the Main Street Gallery in Lakeport and July 8 to 12 in Lucerne at the Lucerne Harbor Artist Village. Each class, participants will have the chance to engage in different art activities and projects, allowing them to explore their interests, develop their artistic skills and bring home a project to keep.
One of the key benefits of this art camp is that it is completely free of charge. This ensures that children and teenagers from all backgrounds have equal access to quality art education and exposure. The program is made possible through the generous grant from the Lake County Wine Alliance.
Another highlight of the Summer Youth Art Camp is the opportunity for participants to learn from experienced and talented artists. These instructors will provide guidance and support, helping young individuals unlock their creative potential and encouraging them to think outside the box.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to enroll their children and teenagers early, as spaces are limited. Registration can be done online at Lakearts.org or by visiting the Main Street Gallery, 325 N Main St, Lakeport.
The Summer Youth Art Camp is a unique opportunity for children and teenagers to engage in artistic expression, expand their horizons, and make new friends who share their passion for the arts. Don't miss out on this incredible chance to nurture and showcase your child's creativity!

Mirror Signals
Once again on May 29, 2024, Past Flotilla Commander Kevin Kealey repeated the signal mirror communication that began in Lake County by Mary Downen in 1903. She was a pioneer woman who built a cabin and lived on Mt. Konocti. Each day using a mirror she would signal her daughter in Lakeport who would signal back with her mirror. In this way, both mother and daughter could assure each other that all was well.
The signal mirror activity was presented to Pomo Elementary and Burns Valley Elementary school classes. Flotilla members Gary Jolley and Bernadette Straub distributed small mirrors to each student so they could signal back to Kealey up on Mt. Konocti. Jolley gave a brief history of Mary Downen and her mirror signals.
To prepare for this activity, Kealey traveled up to the top of Mt. Konocti with two helpers, Craig Meyer and Keith Foy, and a very large mirror. At the given time, using the huge mirror, Kealey reflected the sun image down to the children who could clearly see the flashing reflection. They, in turn, reflected their mirrors back up the mountain and Kealey could see the dozens of small mirror reflections.
The object of the mirror project was to teach youngsters safety by carrying a mirror when hiking in unfamiliar countryside and to use it should they become lost or separated from their family.
The Flotilla of Lake County voluntarily serves the county by advising the public in safety for the children as well as safe boating practices.
