This past week I was on a vacation at the beach. Looking out over the ocean started me thinking about my projects from Digital Illustration a few semesters ago, in which we created a story to develop over the course of the semester. I made an 18th century fantasy story about a girl who is shipwrecked on an unusual island, so you can imagine how the sea was an integral part of the scenery. I have already written about the short trailer animation which was the final project of the class, but there was a lot of work done before that to flesh out the world.
We first designed characters, which I am always excited about. My protagonist is a level-headed commoner who adapts to the situation pretty well. I made three side characters who the protagonist meets at intervals throughout the game (the story is meant to take the form of a game), and the antagonist. I did not have to design five characters, but I usually take on more than I can handle, so of course I did.
We also created three background illustrations to get a feel for what the world looks like. This was the project that convinced me that I actually do like drawing backgrounds! They always seem more intimidating than they are.
There were backgrounds that I drew for the animation which never got used, due to the fact that I ran out of time. They are relatively simple, but I even enjoyed making these backgrounds.
Lastly, here are some photos I took of the ocean, in case you forgot what the ocean looks like.
