A Willits man was arrested on suspicion of homicide Saturday after a woman died following a "violent assault," the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office reported.
According to the MCSO, deputies responded to the 5200 block of Blue Lakes Road in Willits after multiple callers in the Brooktrails area began reporting around 11:07 a.m. June 29 that a man was "causing a disturbance in the area, with the sounds of yelling and possibly fighting."
Approximately 20 minutes after the initial calls, "the responding deputies went to a house in the 5200 block of Blue Lake Road to check on the resident (and saw) that the front windows appeared to be broken out, and there was apparent blood in and around the front of the house."
Once inside the home, deputies reported finding a woman, identified only as a 77-year-old Willits resident, "inside the living room who appeared to have suffered injuries likely caused by a violent assault."
After ensuring "there were no further victims or individuals in the residence and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and administered first aid while summoning emergency medical assistance." However, the woman eventually "succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene."
While deputies were still at the residence, they reported that a vehicle arrived with the suspect, 41-year-old Willits resident Michael A. Coleman, in the passenger seat. After determining "there was evidence that Coleman was involved in the violent assault," deputies reportedly detained him without incident.
After MCSO detectives arrived to investigate, Coleman was booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of homicide and "is being held on a no-bail status. This case is actively being investigated and will likely result in additional charges being requested through the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office. The final cause and manner of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology reports."
The MCSO notes that "investigators from the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office, the Ukiah Police Department, the Willits Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire Prevention Law Enforcement personnel, the California Department of Justice Crime Lab in Santa Rosa, and Department of Justice Criminalists from Sacramento are all assisting with this ongoing investigation," and it requests that anyone "with information related to this investigation call the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office Communications Center at 707-463-4086. Information can also be provided anonymously by utilizing the non-emergency tip-line at 707-234-2100. "
