Kayaks grab the spotlight at Clear Lake this weekend. The tournament is expected draw 130 boats and will go out of Redbud Park in Clearlake. The weigh-in will be on the water. The fish won't be weighed but will be measured and the length will be recorded and transmitted to an official. In kayak tournaments the fish are released within minutes of being caught, which results in being released nearly instantly.
The modern kayak is fully equipped with the latest electronics and many have electric trolling motors. They can cover just about every area on Clear Lake. They can cost in the neighborhood $10,000 or more. Kayak tournaments for bass are gaining in popularity. In comparison the modern bass boat costs $100,000 or more. If fishermen want more information about the tournament they can call Kong Moua at 559-470-3332.
Overall, the bass fishing is only rated as fair. Most of the fishermen, including the guides, are only averaging from 5-10 fish per day. The bass are also smaller with very few weighing more than 8 pounds. This is normal for Clear Lake and the lake's fishery undergoes changes. There are years when the fishery produces large fish and other years when big fish are a rarely.
The good news is that the crappie fishery is thriving. Crappie action continues to be very good with the best action being in the north end of the lake near Rocky Point. Some of the crappie are weighing nearly 3 pounds each with 2 pounders being common. Fishermen are advised to be sure and not catch more than a daily limit of 25 and that includes bluegill. The limit is a combination of 25 bluegill and crappie a day.
One small lake that has been providing decent fishing for bluegill and bass is Highland Springs. The lake is in great shape and is ideal for the kayakers and float tube fishermen.
Indian Valley Reservoir is worth a try this weekend. The lake is full of bass and there is also crappie and catfish. The campground is open at the dam. The road going into the lake is a little rough so care needs to be taken.
Lake Pillsbury is supplying very good bass fishing with an occasional trout. This is a great lake to visit. The road going into the lake is gravel but in decent shape.
A pair of anglers who visited Indian Valley Reservoir earlier this week reported catching more than 20 bass. They said they found the bass holding tight to the flooded trees at mid lake. They caught their fish by dropping shotting a plastic worm
