June 29, 2024 -- 10 AM Whale Watch
We headed out into the Salish Sea with blue skies and heat distortion all around. Heading south to start we made our way to Burrows Island lighthouse and then made our turn to push north up Rosario Strait. Our next stop was at North Pea Pod Rocks. As we passed its Eastern shore we found an adult bald eagle and soon after that a nice bob of harbor seals. Continuing along the rocky coastline we found 3 more juvenile eagles and one eagle that was right in the middle of molting.
We continued our search to the north all the way up passed Patos Island where Captain Carl found us 2 humpback whales from quite a ways off. We joined the two whales and got quite a show from one as she was not enjoying the company of the second whale. After a few flukes she began to slap her flukes at the other whale, trumpeting as she surfaced and even performing a peduncle throw. The aggravated whale turned out to be none other than Big Mama and she was followed closely by an unidentified humpback.
We headed south after that to Alden Bank and found gray whale MN0443703 a whale that has been around the area a lot lately. We got some great looks as it was feeding around Alden Bank and doing large circles. We continued south from there and found 5 Steller sea lions on a marked buoy near Sinclair Island before we called it a day and headed back to Anacortes!
