The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, clinched their second consecutive one-run victory with a 3-2 win against the Reading Fightin' Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, at FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday night.
Silas Ardoin was the hero for the Baysox, driving in all three runs in his first two at-bats. Ardoin's contributions began with an RBI groundout to third base in the second inning, followed by a crucial two-run single with two outs in the fourth inning off Reading's starting pitcher Max Castillo, who took the loss (0-1). This game marked Ardoin's first three-RBI performance of the season, propelling Bowie to an early 3-0 lead.
Bowie's starting right-hander Seth Johnson showcased his talent with four scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and issuing three walks while striking out four. Johnson, ranked as the Orioles' No. 10 prospect, maintained his impressive form with a 1.53 ERA over his last eight starts, covering 29.1 innings.
The Fightin' Phils began their fightback in the fifth inning with Ethan Wilson's leadoff solo home run. However, Dylan Heid (W, 4-2) halted their momentum, retiring the next six batters in a row, including four consecutive strikeouts across his two innings of relief. Heid now boasts a 1.27 ERA over 35.1 innings this season.
Reading further reduced the deficit in the seventh inning when Carlos De La Cruz hit an RBI double. Yet, Bowie's Dan Hammer kept his composure, stranding the potential tying and go-ahead runs on second and third by inducing Caleb Ricketts to pop out, ending the inning.
Lincoln Henzman (S, 1) took the mound in the eighth and delivered two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season. Despite allowing a leadoff walk and a single in the ninth, Henzman forced a double-play grounder and another groundout to secure the victory for Bowie. Notably, Frederick Bencosme extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a bunt single in the fourth inning, the longest streak of his career and the team's best this season.
The Baysox now hold a 12-7 record in one-run games this season.
Looking ahead, Bowie will continue their six-game series against Reading on Friday night. Alex Pham (3-1, 5.85 ERA) will start for the Baysox, facing Reading's Robinson Pina (8-2, 3.50 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Baysox's next homestand kicks off on Monday, July 1, at 6:35 p.m. against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The three-game series runs through July 3, featuring several promotional events. Monday will be "Kids Cheer Free" night, offering a free ticket for children with the purchase of a full-price box seat ticket. Tuesday is designated as Military Appreciation Night, with half-priced box seat tickets available to military personnel with valid proof of service. Wednesday will conclude the series with an Independence Day Celebration, highlighted by the largest fireworks show of the season. Additionally, Baysox game-worn Fourth of July jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit Promise Land Farm.
