After more than 40 years of dedicated service, Woodland High School teacher Jerry Delsol, a well-known and respected figure in agricultural education in Woodland Joint Unified School District, has announced his retirement.
Delsol, a dedicated educator who has profoundly impacted the lives of countless students and families over his remarkable 41-year career, has been a cornerstone of the Woodland High School community, serving in various roles and bringing his passion, expertise, and unwavering commitment to education.
Born in Modesto and raised in El Paso, Texas, Jerry Delsol embarked on his educational journey early in his career.
"I started at Las Plumas High School in Oroville as a student teacher and then got a teaching job at Douglass Junior High School in 1982," he said. "I was assigned as a shop teacher and taught welding and woodshop. I taught at Douglass for 12 years and was then transferred to Woodland High School."
His career also included a brief tenure at Modesto Junior College from 1999 to 2001, before returning to WHS and dedicating the rest of his career to teaching agriculture, science, and biology while serving as the Associated Student Body director and being heavily involved in the school's Future Farmers of America (FFA) program.
Reflecting on his career, Delsol notes his years working directly with his students and families.
"My favorite part of my job is getting to know the families in our community and watching our students grow and take part in our community," he said. "I also like coaching our FFA judging teams so that we can expose our youth to other states."
Delsol's extensive education laid a strong foundation for a career marked by dedication and excellence. He attended various colleges and universities, including Yuba Community College, Shasta College, and Colorado State University. He completed his bachelor's degree at UC Davis, his teaching credential at Chico State and his master's degree at Cal Poly University.
"Jerry Delsol has been instrumental in training the next generation of ag teachers," said Woodland High School Principal Gerald Salcido. "He is always willing to take on a student teacher and pass on his many years of experience. He builds great relationships with students and passes on a skill set that benefits our students for years to come. Mr. Delsol is an amazing instructor and mentor. His presence will definitely be missed next year."
Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin recognized Delsol for his lifetime of service.
"Jerry Delsol is leaving a legacy of agricultural education at WJUSD that will continue to inspire future generations of students and teachers," Ortega-Lampkin said. "His dedication and genuine care for his students will always be remembered and we wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement."
Delsol will fondly remember the supportive and engaging environment for students and colleagues at WJUSD and WHS.
"The kids and the people I have worked with are what I will remember the most," he said. "We have made a terrific department that I am truly proud of."
In retirement, Delsol looks forward to spending more time fishing, repairing his rental property in Marysville, working at the Center for Land-Based Learning and volunteering at Farm to Fork.
