THE UMBRELLA ARTS CENTER, 40 STOW STREET, Concord, MA, APRIL 11 - JUNE 8, 2024

"The exhibit aims to touch hearts and minds, fostering change through art that visualizes the impact and implications of the scientists' work." ( quote from TAPPED IN, Umbrella Arts Center)

This third post about "TAPPED IN" completes my plan to focus on artwork by all ten artist-scientist pairs in the exhibit. The pairs represented here are Mags Harries/ Nadia Szeinbaum, Victor Pacheco /Paul Kirshen, and Casey Figueroa /Terrius Harris.

UNDER OUR FEET by artist Mags Harries with scientist Nadia Szeinbaum:

"(Victrola Speaker, steel and paint )  Listen to the sound of the mycelium*, actively distributing water and/or chemical substances to the surrounding plant community, breaking down matter to create the physical earth we exist. Hidden under our feet is probably one of our greatest solutions to so many of our environmental problems. ( quote from Tapped In Statements) *mycelium is the vegetative part of any fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, threadlike hyphae, often underground

TEMPERATURE CHECK! by artist Victor Pacheco with scientist Paul Kirshen:

"Temperature Check! is an instrument that measures the real time temperature in its location and alerts us through a light display if the temperature is above the average, average or below the average.  The instrument provides a series of scenarios for temperature changes. How can we adapt? What can we do as individuals to help improve our environment? What can we do as a society?" ( quote from Tapped In Statements )

PLASTIGLYPHS by artist Casey Figueroa with Obama Scholar Terrius Harris:

""Plastiglyphs" are a series of large-scale installations created of PVC pipe and painted Vinyl sheets attached with zip ties and other fixtures. Speaking to the history of Indigenous populations and their impacts on place, Plastiglyphs draws on the fundamental expression of humanity through art. Utilizing ancient symbols found local to the place, Plastiglyphs makes clear ...the connection of the past to the present day and boldly illustrates the deep connection of Indigenous Communities to place." ( quote from Tapped In Statements )

Each of the ten "TAPPED IN" art-science teams created temporary art, but their artworks are rich in promise for the future, adding new tools, perspectives or actions to address climate change. As viewers, we can more hopefully move forward.

KEY RESOURCES for "TAPPED IN" are listed in the first and second posts about this exhibit:
