Our Spotlight on the Arts shines brightly on TC O'Brien, Founder and Artistic Director of Hope in Harmony!
We heard the exciting news about Hope in Harmony's upcoming inaugural concerts this June, 2024, and wanted to learn more!
TC, tell us about your role as Founder of Hope in Harmony!
During the pandemic, when singing was considered a "super spreader" activity and music programs shut down, I was inspired by Eric Whitacre's virtual choir performance of Sing Gently. I was brought to tears not only by the beauty of the song and lyrics, but by the visual presentation of the world being united through music.
The lyrics "May our singing be music for others and may it keep others aloft" were the catalyst for the development of Hope in Harmony's mission: "Helping Others through Performances of Excellence".
What are your current concerts and projects?
We believe the power of music can make a positive impact on Southern Maryland, both on and off the stage. Our inaugural choir concert, A Journey of Hope, will introduce to the audience, through song, how Hope in Harmony developed from a dream to reality.
In addition to performances, Hope in Harmony will give back to the community through an outreach project each year. Our first outreach project for 2024-2025 will be focused on ways to support Southern Maryland music teachers.
What is your personal background as an artist?
I received my Bachelor's in Music Education and Master's Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Maryland, College Park. I went on to teach middle and high school choral music for 30 years, directed a semester at both the College of Southern Maryland and St. Mary's College of Maryland, and retired from Charles County Public Schools in 2017.
From 2017-2021 I served as Artistic Director of St. Maries Choral Arts, and in 2023 started the music nonprofit Hope in Harmony.
My choral ensembles performed at many prestigious events including the State Superintendents Conference, National School Board Association's Annual Conference, a joint concert with the United States Army Soldiers' Chorus, national SingStrong a cappella competition, and the Washington Chorus Candlelight Christmas at the Kennedy Center and Strathmore Music Hall. We also opened for the world renowned a cappella ensemble, Pentatonix, in December, 2019.
What are a some of your interests outside of Hope in Harmony?
I love digital scrapbooking and spending time with friends and family, especially time with grandchildren.
How long have you lived in St. Mary's County?
I moved to St. Mary's County from Charles County when I married my husband in 2016.
