Sunday, May 19 I raced the Iowa Games Triathlon. It wasn't on my race calendar until race morning. I have never done this triathlon before as it is usually in July and I am often cheering Tim on as he races. This year he decided to work the event as part of the timing company, so I decided what the heck...let's go race and find that shine under the rust that has formed over the last 10 months!
Before the race, there were three kids who were doing their first ever triathlon racked next to me. It was SO FUN to share knowledge with them and track down Tyson (professional triathlete) to get their picture taken with him pre-race! I think at least two of them are hooked and love to race triathlon...one of them might need a bit more time before deciding to do that again.
Swim: 7:38 for 400 yards = 1/2 age group, 3/14 female, 21/53 overall
The swim was flat, short, and fast. The water wasn't as cold as I was expecting it to be, which was a nice bonus! I had no contact with others in the water and had a nice smooth swim.
Who's ready to swim?! Tyson and I are ready to get this party started!
Bike: 39:42 for 12.4 miles = 1/2 age group, 2/14 female, 14/53 overall
The bike was flat and fast! We had some headwind on the way to the turn around and then got to fly back to transition with the nice tailwind.
Rolling home!!
Run: 26:52 for 3.1 miles = 1/2 age group, 3/14 female, 24/53 overall
This run was also flat and fast! I knew I was first overall female coming off the bike as Tim was at transition and told me where I was. About 1.5 miles into the run I was passed by a spunky, young lady (half my age) and I just couldn't hold onto her. I kept reminding myself to shine as I was running so as not to let myself back off the uncomfortable pace I was holding. This mindset seemed to work as I negative split my run!
HOLY SH!T! I can finally back off and breathe!
Overall: 1:16:42 for 15.8 miles = 1/2 age group, 2/14 female, 16/53 overall
So glad I showed up to race this one! What a great rust buster to help me find some shine again since I haven't raced a triathlon since July of 2023.
Podium finish (they only give age group awards, not overall)
