Repetition …with a twist!

There are some commercial interior design situations where repetition and replication are very important.

Part of the goal in developing workable repetition concepts is to maintain successful, re-occurring interior design patterns that will be recognized and preferred by customers or clients anywhere they are encountered.

Repetitious interior design must be durable, and should cooperate and harmonize with the other design aspects of the project, such as graphic and architectural features.

Developing a commercial interior design "character concept" that can be reproduced over and over without losing its appeal, requires a thorough understanding and appreciation of the client's environmental goals.  The repetition must have a clear purpose.

We are all familiar with the power of branding – recognizing a familiar trademark image in packaging, color, shape or even a musical jingle.  Environments with recognizable configurations or color patterns also carry messages that inspire confidence in the consistent delivery of the consumers' expectations.

When you are seeking help developing a durable, repetition-based environmental vision, selection of your professional designer has an added layer of consideration.

It will be important to work with a professional who is familiar with the special design disciplines required for successful, durable repetitious design.   Your decisions and choices must meet additional criteria.   The usual expectations for longevity and quality performance from materials, finishes, furnishings, etc., must also meet an esthetic appeal quotient that does not get lost simply because it is duplicated across town or in the next town, and possibly the next!

Your design team must walk that treacherous line between dependable appeal over time, and the risk of monotony!

Consistency is an essential aspect of repetition.  There are examples of excellent success with repetitious design all around us!   In all venues we can spot some obvious winners such as favorite restaurant images that we can spot as we drive along or while looking through listings.  Whether it's a coffee cafe, a long-standing candy wrapper design– or the profile and characteristics of a hotel brand -- the customer or client wants their expectations fulfilled.

Dependable frameworks reinforce confidence.  When seeking out a familiar building or brand, a customer has a whole list of expectations in mind.

The visitor industry (hotels, restaurants, resorts) presents good examples of repetition.  That industry often designs facilities using concept "packages" for interior design consistency.   These are design choice controls that establish specific limitations and preferences for facility interiors.  Packages leave little room for innovation.

For instance, when a franchisee (in various venues) decides to affiliate with a specific brand, they have to comply within the design choices offered by that brand.  Usually those guidelines are based on tried and proven appeal results; but, on the other hand, your own vision for your facility's personality may not be able to happen entirely.

There is an upside and a downside.  Your professional designer knows how to balance the confining aspects of repetition (and "packages") with your personal vision.   Your team has experience cooperatively modifying stringent limitations -- while complying with the advantages of such guidelines. Your project can enjoy the benefits of both.
