If you've been paying attention to our blog of late, you know we're just about ready to close the book on our Costa Rica assignment. Having passed the midway point of May, we now have less than one month left in San Jose (and entirely too many things we still want to do).

For much of this tour — our fifth overseas assignment since we embarked on this Foreign Service adventure some thirteen years ago — we considered San Jose neck-and-neck with Nairobi, our first posting. As our remaining days in San Jose slip through our fingers, little doubt remains that Costa Rica has wrested pole position from what previously had been far and away our favorite assignment. Many of the things we've come to love about serving in San Jose were things we appreciated about Nairobi as well, such as amazing nature-based travel opportunities and vibrant Ultimate frisbee community. But there are also several things that clearly set Costa Rica apart. Chief among these is our facility with the local language and resultant ability to integrate and develop much deeper relationships with local friends. A plethora of opportunities to indulge in all our favorite activities and Costa Rica's amazing music scene don't hurt either.

What will hurt is saying goodbye to it all, perhaps more so than any of our previous Foreign Service farewells — precisely because of how much we've enjoyed living here these past two-and-a-half years. All that said, there's no use crying over spilled milk. One month left, give or take, is one month in which we can still try to make the most of all the things we love about Costa Rica: get-togethers with our closest friends, salsa lessons and music concerts, and our final travels and explorations, including a return visit next week to one of our favorite parts of this beautiful country. Stay tuned: we may be mere weeks from packing out, but there's still time to squeeze in a few more adventures before we say farewell.
