In a tragic incident on April 29, 2024, at around 6:26 p.m., Calvert County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a motorcycle crash in the 3700 block of Chaneyville Road, Owings. Upon arrival, deputies found a motorcycle off the roadway with its operator deceased.
The deceased was identified as 52-year-old Richard Evan Ganyon Jr. from North Beach. Preliminary investigations suggest that the 2004 Harley Davidson he was operating was traveling north when it veered off the road. The exact cause of the motorcycle leaving the paved surface remains unclear, but it appears Ganyon lost control while on the unpaved shoulder.
The Calvert County Sheriff's Office's Crash Reconstruction Team, led by Deputy First Class Mike Lewis, promptly arrived at the scene to conduct a detailed investigation. As part of the ongoing effort to understand the dynamics of the crash, the team is examining all potential factors that could have contributed to this fatal incident.
Authorities are seeking assistance from the public. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact Deputy First Class Mike Lewis at 410-535-2800 or via email at Mike.Lewis.Jr@calvertcountymd.gov, referencing case number 24-34379.
This incident has raised concerns about motorcycle safety and the importance of maintaining control on varying road surfaces. The investigation will continue to focus on the sequence of events leading up to the crash, with a detailed analysis expected to provide clearer insights into the possible causes.
