In a remarkable display of academic excellence, Will Alcorn, a senior at La Plata High School, has earned a perfect score on the ACT, a feat achieved by approximately 0.25% of test takers. Last year, only 3,376 out of 1.34 million students accomplished this, securing a composite score of 36.
The ACT, which encompasses multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science, along with an optional writing segment, is designed to assess the knowledge students have acquired in school. Achieving a 36 composite score suggests a student has mastered the necessary skills and knowledge for success in first-year college core subjects. "Earning a top score on the ACT is a remarkable achievement," stated Janet Goodwin, CEO of ACT, highlighting the significance of this accomplishment.
Alcorn's journey to perfection was not without its challenges. He took the test four times, facing difficulties during his first attempt due to being overly hydrated. This experience led him to advise future test-takers about managing their water intake before the exam. Over time, Alcorn refined his approach by studying from a book previously used by his older brothers. He focused particularly on geometry and English grammar and punctuation—subjects he felt needed more attention due to missed classes during the pandemic and personal academic weaknesses.
Besides his academic achievements, Alcorn is also deeply involved in extracurricular activities at La Plata High. He holds the top rank in his class and has committed to the University of Alabama to pursue a degree in accounting. His involvement includes the Key Club, the It's Academic team, the National Honor Society, and the math team. Additionally, he serves as the vice president of the Student Government Association and participates in Unified Sports, including tennis and track.
As of 2024, the total number of students who have taken the ACT is not yet available, but Alcorn's accomplishment sets a high standard for his peers and future test takers. His story is not only about personal triumph but also serves as an inspiring example of how persistence and focused preparation can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
