More on Salvador from the Willits Weekly/ Margi Gomez Guhde:
"28-year-old Willits artist Salvador Andrade has been honing his craft for more than 10 years, since his high school days in his native Guadalajara, Mexico.
His early inspirations came from legendary Mexican painters like José Clemente Orozco, a Mexican caricaturist and painter who specialized in political murals, and the well-known Diego Rivera, who together established the Mexican Mural Renaissance in the early 20th century. Salvador named another influential Mexican muralist and architect, Juan O'Gorman, who was commissioned to build a house for Frieda Kahlo and Diego Riviera, later devoting himself to muralism, including four thousand square meters of mosaic murals covering the Central Library at the National University in Mexico City.
Andrade first came across the work of these pioneering artists in books that he sought out as a teenager. Andrade credits these artists and others with his interest in making large-scale paintings which have been shown at Willits Center for the Arts as well as Gualala Art Center.
His unique swirling brushwork extends from his principal subjects, which are usually focused on the female figure, into the paintings and backgrounds, giving his large images a somewhat surrealistic feel. He has used his friends as subjects work thus far, incorporating background elements from photographs and from his imagination. Another of his inspirations is poetry. His favorite poems often find their way into his work, including in one of the paintings showing currently at the Brewery, the background of which features a poem by Octavio Paz entitled "My Life with the Wave." The young artist, who came to Willits ten years ago, has been studying painting, (while holding down a full-time job), with Lisa Rosenstreich at Mendocino College, who he commends for her knowledge and encouragement. He also credits Willits leading light Holly Madrigal for her support, along with Gary Martin and the Willits Center for the Arts. Andrade tells the story of a painting that he donated to the Center, which the organization was able to sell for $600. Martin then contacted him offering him gallery space for his first one-man exhibit, an experience that inspired him to continue his painting and his art education.
Andrade has worked hard to get where he is in his artistic journey, but he is just getting started.
"I would love to do some serious mural painting," he says. "That is my dream." "
The Willits Center for the Arts is located 71 East Commercial Street, Willits and is open Friday to Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
