LANCASTER, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team concluded their 2024 season with a 19-7 loss to No. 3 Franklin & Marshall College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The match took place on Sunday afternoon at Shadek Stadium on Franklin & Marshall's campus.
Game Highlights
Franklin & Marshall (17-3) started strong, establishing a 4-0 lead within the first 11 minutes, with Lauren Pittman scoring twice. St. Mary's (12-7) managed their first shot at 10:44, taken by junior attacker Ella Baynes. The Diplomats extended their lead to 5-0 with Lydia Cassilly scoring her second goal of the game.
St. Mary's College saw a glimmer of hope when first-year midfielder Sanne Elling scored their first goal at 2:25, assisted by sophomore attacker Katelin Scala.
Franklin & Marshall continued to dominate, reaching a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter. However, St. Mary's responded with back-to-back goals by Scala and junior attacker Hailey Betch, reducing the deficit to 7-3. The Diplomats then surged ahead, leading 10-3 at halftime, with Lane Lambeth contributing two goals.
The Seahawks managed another goal before halftime, with Baynes converting a pass from Elling, marking her 21st goal of the season. However, a subsequent goal was called back due to a crease violation.
In the third quarter, Franklin & Marshall broke the game open, scoring seven unanswered goals and effectively sealing their victory. Junior midfielder Madison Laine ended the Seahawks' scoring drought with an unassisted goal early in the fourth quarter.
Despite the late efforts from Betch and senior captain MC Mortimer, who each scored in the final minutes, St. Mary's couldn't close the gap. The Diplomats added two more goals, securing their 19-7 victory.
